Climate Negative Driving Lessons

Catz-i com ADiT is proud to announce, that we are now officially ‘Climate Negative’. This means our entire business, from paper clips to screen wash is Climate Zero, ahead of our scheduled target.

In 2002, we were the 1st registered driving school in the United Kingdom, to become Carbon Negative. When we advertised this on our training vehicles, most didn’t even know what it meant, until we explained carbon offsetting, it was such a new ‘thing’.

Over the last 23 years, we have offset ONLY with UN registered companies*, buying shares in one of them in 2021. These companies have offset carbon emissions for us in; Africa, The Amazon, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, & Mongolia, to name a few. We have planted over 17,000 trees^ in these countries, and we have also invested in renewable energy & sources, permanent carbon removal, and Snow Leopard conservation.

What is Climate Negative?

Carbon Positive; is when the amount of carbon we release into the atmosphere, is then taken out again by offsetting the same amount, over a period of time.

Climate Negative; is when we offset more carbon, than we create.

Without realising, I have been using the wrong calculation, meaning, we have almost doubled our climate contributions.

How to Save Money on Your Driving Lessons

Since lockdown, the DVSA’s practical driving test waiting time has risen significantly. This also makes it very difficult for driving schools, where it is not only difficult to find an available driving instructor, but you can end up paying hundreds for lessons that you don’t need when you find one.

Whilst the national average amount of driving lessons taken is 48 hours, we still cover much more in an average of 31 hours. But, with long driving test waiting times, we have several students paying for lessons that they don’t need, whilst waiting for their test date. So here’s our top tips:

1/. Make sure that you have a Provisional Driving Licence

Before you can take driving lessons, you need to have a Provisional Licence, which you need to bring with you, along with your national insurance number to your first lesson. We need these to register you, and without either, you will not be able to drive the car. Make sure that you have both, before you book your first lesson.

2/. Book your Theory Test

As soon as your instructor has you registered on our app, you can ask your instructor for free access to our Theory Test App section. This saves you buying an app, gives access to the Highway Code, and your instructor can help you remotely, if you’re struggling in a particular area. We can also guide you when to apply for your theory test, which needs completed and passed, as soon as possible. If you prefer, you can pass your theory test before you start your driving lessons.

4/. Your Driving Lessons and our App

Using your ‘Progress’ section in our app, you will see how you are progressing in each subject. There will be a clear target that you will work towards on each lesson, so no time (or your money) is wasted. This way, you will see for yourself how you are progressing, and your instructor will ask you to apply for your driving test, when all the basic subjects have been started.

5/. Apply For Your Driving Test

When your instructor asks you to apply for your driving test, it’s really important that you do so, as soon as possible. The test waiting time is 21.3 weeks, and you don’t want to be test ready, then just go out for a drive each week, which is where you can waste hundreds of pounds In lessons you don’t need. When we ask you to apply for test, it is based on the waiting time, and that you continue regular lessons.

Q. Can I stop taking lessons until nearer my test?

A. You are free to stop taking lessons at anytime, however, please remember that all driving instructors are self employed. Therefore, if they keep a space open for 6 weeks, that’s 6 weeks that no one pays them. If your instructor does that with 5 students, that’s 30 hours of income lost. This is why ‘all’ driving schools require you to continue taking lessons until your test day, so that your place is secure.

Q. Can I just find another instructor when it’s nearer my test?

A. If you wish to stop taking lessons until nearer your test, you are free to do so. You can then check if your instructor has a space nearer your test date, or you can try other driving schools. However, 99.9% of driving instructors will not take you on just a few weeks before your test. This is because the instructor who presents you for test, is graded on your performance, and we/they simply don’t know you well enough as to your road safety habits, and ability to pass the test. If we find you need extra training, the chances are there won’t be space in the diary, So it’s not out of spite that we say ‘we can’t’.

Recap; The Cheapest Method

This means that the cheapest method for you is:

1/. Make sure that you have a Provisional Driving Licence & your National Insurance number for your first lesson.

2/. Apply for your theory test when you start your driving lessons, and by using our Theory Test App, you don’t need to spend money on anything else.

3/. Apply for your driving test, as soon as you can, when your instructor asks you to.

4/. Keep consistent with your driving lessons, and if you can get practice with a friend or relative, let your instructor know, and we will guide you with what to practice.

Don’t Get Ghosted: Young Drivers and Fake Car Insurance
Getting your first car and hitting the road is a huge milestone, but it also means navigating the
world of car insurance. Unfortunately, there’s scammers waiting to target new and young drivers with tempting deals that are too good to be true – these are often signs of “ghost broking.
Ghost brokers sell fake car insurance policies, commonly advertising on social media platforms.
They usually create completely bogus documents, alter real policies, or even cancel real policies after selling them to you, pocketing the refund, but the initial paperwork can be identical to the real thing. The result? You think you’re insured, but you’re actually driving without valid insurance – a serious legal oﬀence.

What’s a Broker?
A broker is a business that will use your details, and compare them against a range of companies to find (broker), the best deal. The broker makes their money by being paid commission for recommending you to them. Familiar broker examples* are; compare.com, Compare the Market, and Adrian Flux, who may compare with insurance companies like Admiral, Aviva, and LV.

Why are young drivers targeted?
New drivers often face higher insurance premiums, making those super-cheap deals oﬀered by
ghost brokers seem incredibly appealing. But the consequences of falling for this scam can be
devastating. Imagine being involved in an accident. If your policy is fake, you’re on your own. You’ll be personally responsible for covering damages to other vehicles, medical bills, and legal costs. This could lead to serious financial hardship for driving without insurance, points on your licence, and criminal prosecution. This will also cause insurance companies in future to either not insure you, or charge higher amounts, as they will see you as a greater risk.

How to avoid getting “ghosted”
• Be wary of deals that sound too good to be true: If a price is significantly lower than other
quotes, it’s a red flag.
• Do your research; Check the credentials of any insurance broker or company. Are they
registered? Do they have a legitimate website and contact information?
• Verify directly with the insurer: If you’re unsure about a policy’s legitimacy, contact the insurance
company directly to confirm. Don’t rely solely on contact details provided by the broker.
• Don’t rush: Take your time to compare quotes from reputable insurance providers.
• Don’t be pressured into making a quick decision.
• Ask questions: Don’t hesitate to ask the broker about the policy details, coverage, and claims
process. A legitimate broker will be happy to answer your questions.
Getting aﬀordable car insurance is important, but it’s crucial to do it the right way. Don’t let the
lure of a cheap deal blind you to the risks of ghost broking. Protect yourself by being vigilant and doing your due diligence. Your safety and financial well-being depend on it.

Change to Driving Licences

DVLA is set to launch the Digital Driving Licence, later this year, which is a modern and convenient way to get your licence instead of a physical one. This could also mean that your provisional is updated to a full licence, within hours of passing your driving test.

The digital licence will be part of a new government app., which can also be used as a secure ID for things like buying alcohol, voting, and entry into clubs.

Digital driving licence will come into effect in 2025

Features and how they’ll keep your info safe:

– The new digital licence will be linked to the updated Gov.uk app, which will be like a digital wallet for all your government information. Currently the app holds your national insurance number, help to save, tax returns for the self employed, and some information on benefits you may be receiving.

– The app will use biometrics and other cool security features to make sure only the real owner of the licence can access it. With fraud and identity theft rising each year, the government hopes that this will help protect us better.

– The wallet could also be used to pay road tax, and claim benefits in future.

As a father of two daughters, a feature I really like with the digital licence, is that you can hide your address when you show them to places like bars or shops, which is great for privacy, and personal safety.

They’re also expected to make self-checkout age verification at supermarkets easier, so you don’t have to wait for a staff member to check your age.

DVSA Test Cancelations

Some of the reasons the DVSA may cancel your test, may be adverse weather conditions, illness, staff shortages, DVSA strike action, and ferry cancellation for our students in Argyll. If a cancellation wasn’t stressful enough, sometimes this can be at very shorty notice.

When a test is cancelled, DVSA will contact you by letter, and provide a new test date, if they know ahead of time that your test will not go ahead. If your test is cancelled on the day of your test, they will send you an email to inform you, after 0800hrs, which may also include a text or a phone call. Another test will be sent to you automatically, so you do not need to contact DVSA about this.

The exception to this is examiner strike action. Not all examiners belong to a union, or the same union, so when strike action is called, you MUST show for test, since your examiner may still have shown up to work. Unfortunately, this normally results in disappointment, but this is the same procedure for everyone, and the DVSA will automatically send you a new test date.

In both of the above cases, you will not loose your test fee that you paid to the DVSA, however, your instructor will still need to be paid for the pre- test lesson you had booked, and the hour you had booked for test. You can claim this back as compensation from the DVSA. We cannot do this for you, due to privacy laws, so you need to pay as normal first, then claim the money back, but we will sign off your application for you, so you are reimbursed as quickly as possible.

NB We appreciates that you have been working hard towards this day for months, and we understand your disappointment if you are affected. Unfortunately, there are a few, who think we have mind control over DVSA examiners, or a Godly influence over the weather, where our student’s get special treatment, and honking the horn will ‘part thy floods for thine test to go forth’. Ask questions, and we will guide you, but do bear in mind that it’s also outwith our control, and not our fault either.

NEW EVERYTHING‼️

We have been industry leaders in so many areas over the last 22 years, and we have no plans of slowing down.

We were the first driving school in the UK registered as carbon neutral, back in 2002, and whilst we still believe that we lead with our green credentials, we want to go much further still, with so many new features, starting with our new App (details coming soon), and relaunching this blog. But to do this, we need to take a few weeks to redefine our business, from our branding, to our website, our marketing to our highly successful delivery of our training.

Therefore, our website and other features will be under maintenance, while we develop, and go through training with our new partners, but we will keep you updated as we go.

We appreciate your patience during this time, and if you have any suggestions, we would love to hear from you, after all, you are who we serve, and your opinion really matters.

Examiner Strike Action

The DVSA (who carries out the driving test), has announced dates that they plan take industrial action as:
Thursday 23 November 2017
Monday 04 December 2017
Tuesday 05 December 2017
What we MUST do on the day;
1/. If you have a Driving Test booked for any of the above dates, you ‘MUST’ attend for test as planned, as not all examiners will be on strike.
2/. The DVSA will automatically send you a new date by post and/or email if your test is affected.
3/. You will be charged at your normal lesson rate for your pre-test and test time, however you can claim both fees back by completing an ‘Out of pocket expenses’ as a result of the strike. Therefore you will be refunded for all fees paid to us on the day and you will NOT be charged by the DVSA for tour new test date.
4/. We will provide you with an application form or you can download one here.
For more information, please ask your Driving Instructor, who will be happy to answer your questions.
Please be assured that any inconvenience caused by the DVSA strike action is completely out of our control, so please don’t take your frustration out on your Driving Instructor.

Hacked!

Dear Customer,

Unfortunately our blog with over 700 posts was hacked & deleted. We are fairly sure we know who it was, since our online security is 3 fold (not just a password).

Unfortunately we can’t prove this and the Police have little interest. However, whilst we have to start again I can assure you that we do not us online or ‘Cloud’ services to store your personal information and is also protected by password and authentication methods.

Some articles have been recovered and these will be added in the coming weeks.
